Bob will be greatly missed by his family, employees and all those that knew him. His attention to detail, ingenuity, focus on quality and demand for first class customer service will forever be a part of his companies and the legacy that he created. Bob was a pioneer in the sod industry, starting Sporting Valley with a small field on his parent’s farm 49 years ago. Once he saw the need for sod on sports fields he branched into that arena also, starting Hummer Turfgrass Systems to specialize in natural grass sports fields. Over his many years in business Bob contributed his time and energy to local and national groups and associations that supported research and education in sod and sports fields including American Sod Producers Association, Turfgrass Producers International, Sports Turf Managers Association, Keystone Athletic Field Managers Association, Pennsylvania Turfgrass Council, Cultivated Sod Association and Pennsylvania Landscape and Nursery Association. Bob also served as host to several of the Turfgrass Producers International summer field days where growers from all over the world visited Lancaster, PA and his turf farms.
Bob was a graduate of the Penn State turf program and was especially proud of the long history that his company has had working on Beaver Stadium. The number of projects that Bob was involved with over his career is too many to mention, however he always enjoyed the unique challenges that they each presented and providing his clients with outstanding products and service.
In Bob’s memory we have established the J Robert Hummer Memorial Fund that will benefit the study and advancement of turfgrass science by providing student scholarships and graduate project funding at the Penn State Center for Turfgrass Science. Those desiring may contribute in Bob’s memory at www.gofundme.com/bobhummer.
Bob’s legacy will not end as his companies will continue to operate and serve their clients without interruption. Matt Wimer has taken on the role of President of the companies and a Board of Directors including his sons Anton, Jonathan and Christopher Hummer is in place to guide the strategic direction of the companies as we plan for the future.
We look forward to the 2018 season and onto 2019 when we will celebrate 50 years of business and the lasting impact the Bob has had on all of us!

On August 29, 2018, Ed Kellenberger passed away.
Ed was Bob Hummer’s first employee at Sporting Valley and Hummer Turf. For 30 plus years Ed wore a lot of hats; driver, harvester operator and project manager. He retired in 2008 but stayed on almost full time for several years after that to teach me a lot of what I know about sports field construction. After that Ed stuck around and helped plant in the Spring and Fall. All the sod we are harvesting now was prepared and planted by him. Prior to working at Sporting Valley, Ed helped build the Four Season’s Golf Course.
Ed was a very loyal person. He stuck by Bob in good times and bad. The work that Bob and Ed did together over many years built the foundation for what this company is today.
Please keep Ed’s wife Kathy and his children in your thoughts and prayers.
