Beaver Stadium, this storied field, has had many renovation projects over the years, but the entire playing surface has not been renovated since 2005. Ten years and five straight, rainy home games in a row; Beaver Stadium was ready for a makeover. Working for four days in the Fall of 2015, our crews were able to strip the old surface off with the Koro Topmaker and haul it off-site with our dump carts. The next step was to laser grade the field to the correct crown and the field was then finished with thick cut Kentucky Bluegrass Big Roll sod. Thick cut sod was used to ensure that the rolls would stay in place when the field was used only two weeks later!
A total of 70,000 square feet of Kentucky Bluegrass sod was installed between the playing surface at Beaver Stadium and the stadium’s nursery. The same sod was placed in the nursery to ensure that any small repairs done to the field will match perfectly!
Dating back over three decades, Hummer Turf has a long and distinguished association with Penn State University in the design and construction of high use natural grass athletic fields. From as far back as the 1970’s, Hummer Turf has been instrumental in upgrading everything from Beaver Stadium to the award winning Jeffrey Soccer Field.
This original native soil field was amended, regraded and resurfaced many times over the years to include our legendary resodding more than once during mid season use! We also recently installed an automatic irrigation system.
